Dawn Tonneman is a middle school art teacher and practicing artist who focuses in watercolor, acrylics, pastel and photography. She graduated from The Ohio State University in 1994 with both a Bachelor of Fine Arts, concentrating in Painting, Drawing and Ceramics, and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History. In 2015, she received her Master of Arts degree in Education from Liberty University. Dawn is also a Yoga teacher, Reiki master and Sound and Vibrational Therapy Practitioner. She is the wife of Dave, a construction superintendent and United States Military Veteran, and the mother of two daughters, Elise, who is a Construction Health and Safety specialist, and Hannah, who is a Paramedic and Flight Medic.
For Dawn, Art isn’t simply a creative outlet, but a way to capture lived experience. Most of her architectural works are of locations that she has visited and experienced. She works to not simply capture the likeness of the location, but the spirit and mood of the place as well. With her landscape works, she tries to create an environment that the viewer can imagine themselves inhabiting: feeling the sand between the toes and the sound of the waves of a seascape, smelling the flowers or hearing the birds within a country landscape, and so forth. She has also done commemorative pieces that capture special animal friends and pets. Although she may have a “vision” that she wants to achieve in the overall work, she also wants her works to connect with the viewer, and to take on a new life beyond her creative touch. As Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Art is for the release of the soul.
